The reason stuttering develops is still not fully understood by the experts. Boys are stricken more frequently than girls. The age of seven is when it most often appears.

In most stuttering cases, the way the parent reacts has an effect on whether it will get worse or not. A calm reaction is optimal. If a parent corrects every word or finishes what the child is struggling to say, the stuttering with accelerate.

One person may require the services of a doctor, nurse and audiologist in conjunction with those of the speech therapist. Sometimes occupational therapy is useful, especially with the elderly. A behaviorist may be able to contribute as well.

Actors and actresses often hire a professional to advise them on developing an accent. The voice can be made more pleasant in the person who speaks with an unpleasant tone. This professional also works with the deaf.
