Making an appointment with the dentist used to involve filling cavities, fixing bad teeth and the yearly cleaning. Fast-forward to today you'll find a dentist has a long list of services. Dentists today have expanded their skills into a wide variety of offerings including beautifying teeth. Cosmetic dentistry, as it is called, is one service now widely available.

There are many kinds of cosmetic treatments. Teeth whitening or bleaching is one of the most popular. A dentist is able to make your teeth as white as those you see in a TV commercial.

Smokers now are able to have this work done for them to remove the smoke stains from their teeth. It used to be that dentures were the way to help a patient chew his food. Now patients use them to improve their outward appearance.

Implants are another cosmetic procedure. It became popular for improving the outward appearance of your frontal teeth. If one of your teeth happens to fall off it is probably due to the fact that it cannot attach to a root any longer. Implants replace both the roots and the tooth itself.

If implants are not the solution for your misshapened or chipped teeth then your dentist can offer you a contouring procedure. This procedure involves reshaping your teeth and lining up your crooked ones. You can have a straighter and improved smile with this procedure. It is only suitable for patients that have healthy teeth.

For straightening a multitude of teeth, metal braces are what the doctor will order. These braces align the teeth to their intended position. This procedure can take months to complete and sometimes years, all depending on how crooked your teeth are. Metal braces adjust a full row of teeth concurrently. Unfortunately, many patients complain that the metals and the wires are very irritating.

An alternative to metal braces are the recently discovered invisible braces. These have the same function as metal braces, but it looks like you are not wearing anything. They are more comfortable than metal braces and they are just as effective. It's up to the patient to follow the dentist's instructions to make this procedure successful.

Lastly, for discolored or chipped teeth, you can have veneers installed. This procedure is permanent because the dentist bonds tiny shells to the surface enamel of your healthy teeth.

In conclusion, you should know that a dentist can be helpful for more than just a semi-annual cleaning. He has lots of tricks up his sleeve to make your smile shine bright.
