Tattoos have been gaining popularity for centuries, and that popularity is likely not going to slow down any time soon. While refinement over the years has made the process of getting a tattoo safer and safer, there are still risks that you need to consider before committing to getting a piece of art permanently applied to your skin.

One of the more obvious risks is that of contaminated equipment. If a tattoo artist doesn't clean and sanitize his tattoo gun and parlor with regularity and proper procedures, the probability of getting an infection can be alarmingly high. The process of getting a tattoo should be treated like a medical procedure, and adhere to similar sanitation standards.

In the days following your tattoo application, you should watch for signs of infection. If the tattooed area swells or exhibits a large amount of irritation, you should have it examined by a doctor as soon as possible. An infected tattoo can usually be treated with a course of antibiotics or other medicines. In some severe cases, including cases where the patient may have an allergic reaction to the ink, the tattoo may have to be surgically removed, which comes with its own share of risks.

More of a major annoyance and less of a health hazard is the risk of getting a poorly-done tattoo. Even if you get a tattoo removed, the scar will be visible for quite some time. With such a permanent investment, you understandably want to do everything you can to avoid getting a tattoo that looks sloppy.

Before making a commitment to getting a tattoo, you may want to take some to check out the prospective tattoo studio. You can ensure that the artist is skilled enough and the hygiene standards are up to snuff. If the studio is clean and tidy, and the equipment is properly sanitized, the risks are reduced.

A tattoo is a serious commitment. As with any such endeavor, you should carefully consider the risks, and whether you really think the tattoo will be a good idea down the line. Many people who rush into getting tattoos end up regretting their decision years later.
