Tension headaches are among the most commonly reported conditions and also considered difficult to control. Symptoms may start at the base of the skull and form tremendous pain including tightening sensations across the forehead. The effects are best managed with strategies offered by Portland chiropractic for longer lasting and healthy results.

Indications of tension headaches include a slow, dull throb, squeezing sensations, and possible stiffness in neck and shoulder muscles. These signs will often begin near the base of the skull where it will intensify on both sides of the head. Most people complain of fatigue and possible insomnia.

There is no clear source for the development of tension headaches. Studies have shown that brain chemical imbalances and specific triggers involving stress, trauma, and the interactions of prescription medication can contribute to problematic function. Sinus, jaw clenching, and exposure to irritating foods can facilitate the development of head pain.

The chiropractor will require a complete medical history and a detailed assessment of symptoms to determine the presence of this condition. Physical examinations of the head, neck, and sinuses will be performed. X-rays may be requested to determine whether any structural abnormalities within the neck are contributing to chronic pain.

Research has indicated that the application of a neck adjustment can relieve structural problems. The upper cervical spine that has become misaligned can impede nerve function requiring adjustment methods to relieve strain and pain. The presence of subluxations contributes to tremendous pressure and requires assistance for healthy operation.

The experience of heightened levels of stress can be relieved with tissue massage and physical therapy. Procedures for correction involve light exercise and supportive practice aiming to strengthen the muscles, tissues, and decrease sensations of stiffness within the body. With Portland chiropractic all persons suffering from tension headaches are provided corrective intervention and management strategies.
