There is a serious sleep disorder in which the affected individual stops breathing for a few times throughout the night. In some cases, breathing cessations can take place hundreds of times. Such problem is referred to as sleep apnea, and it's a very common issue. In fact, in the United States it is believed that more than 22 million people are suffering from it. Overweight and older males are the ones that are at high risk of it, although females can get it as well. It's very important to find the best sleep apnea relief because it can in fact put one's health at risk.

Excessive sleepiness during the day is one of the most obvious problems that it can bring about. This can keep the individual from having a productive day. Adults may fail to function optimally at work, while kids may not be able to perform very well in school. Also, excessive sleepiness during the day can endanger the life of the person as well as those around him or her.

According to health authorities, there are so many serious matters that can stem from the problem. For instance, it's not unlikely for the blood pressure of the individual to become increased. Having high blood pressure from time to time such as when exercising, tired or anxious is completely normal. However, it is an entirely different matter if the blood pressure is constantly elevated.

The problem with having a high blood pressure reading all the time is it can increase a person's risk of developing heart disease. The World Health Organization or WHO says that it is the number one killer on the face of the planet. In the United States, approximately 610,000 people die of it every year.

Cessations in breathing while the person is fast asleep, needless to say, can deprive the body of the oxygen it greatly needs. Robbing the brain of much needed oxygen is a serious matter. Clearly, it's something that can hinder optimum cognitive functioning. Such can also leave the affected individual with severe headaches.

Suffering from heart disease can make it really dangerous to rob your brain of much needed oxygen. That's because it can significantly increase your risk of one day suffering from a stroke. Some people who get immediate medical care are able to survive stroke. Sadly, the rest are not as fortunate.

The disorder can also increase an individual's likelihood of having elevated blood sugar levels. Such can cause symptoms like weakness, excessive hunger and increased thirst. The problem with having high levels of sugar in the bloodstream all the time is it's likely to pave the way for the development of diabetes. Once a person is diagnosed with diabetes, he or she has no other choice but to deal with it forever since there is no known cure for it.

Due to the various associated complications, treating sleep apnea is so important. Fortunately, it can be controlled via some simple dietary and lifestyle changes. Numerous therapies for this problem are also around.
