In the broad course of audiology, specialists with the specialty in assessing a person hearing ability are referred to as audiologist. Before evaluation, screening is done so as to separate individuals free of listening loss from those affected. The procedure of screening those problems is a quick and cost effective compared to that of evaluation as it involves few questions by the specialist mainly on medical and hearing history. Those that fail the screening test repeatedly are subject to hearing evaluations.

Evaluations are carried out with different aims helpful to the individual. First, the nature of an infection is shown, and its extent of which it covers is also clearly indicated. It also helps the specialist to know the required treatment to give to the individual. The process is carried along many other machines that perform each and every specific task.

Except for children who audiological testing may be done in the hospital or with the aid of an individual, self-testing with approved aids is recommended for persons who feel their listening action is not in order before visiting a certified specialist. In infants and toddlers, they are observed on how they respond to a minimum loud volume by how their body motions show. Tests used in the evaluation are dependent on age.

Special tests used in the evaluation include pure tone testing; it works on determining the faintest tone an individual will hear at different frequencies either high or low. A device that resembles the earphone is worn to receive information and convey it to the computer with software that interprets results in an audiogram. At times the audiometry may be visual or conditioned especially when it is for children. In visual, they look at the sound source and respond to the sound while in conditioned they are trained on how to respond to listening a certain voice. The method is effective in ears with waxes and fluid.

Expression of words by speech and also the ability to listen is another evaluation method. The pitch of the voice is noted so as to be interpreted wisely. Areas of less noise and those of extreme noise are ideal for testing the hearing ability and concentration. Those who can hear the message conveyed easily without much struggle show no impairment compared to those that conveyance of message is a real struggle.

The middle ear contains most of the components of the ear that are very vital. To test ear functioning much information helpful to identify any condition is derived. Detection of fluid, air and appearance of the eardrum is shown. The specific location of an infection area and its extent is noted. The relationship between the nervous system and auditory system is keenly linked to understanding the problem.

Treatment of this impairment is achieved after different levels of assessment, and the patients have advised accordingly. Regular checkup and audiological rehabilitation are applied. Technology in listening aids is helpful for continuous training as one can personally use them by self-adjustments. Noise and listening loss prevention is essential. Environments with noises should be avoided and those working there should have the required protective measures.

Certified practitioners are the only individuals allowed to care and examine individual with the problems. Evaluation gives a detailed study on the cause of the impairment hence highly preferred.
