Every year there are millions of kids seen in the ER due to injuries they sustained while playing sports. Some sporting activities tend to be more hazardous than other ones. When the correct safety gear is used, the chances of harm are reduced. The safety equipment is effective when it is well fitting. Unfortunately, handing down the gear is not a good choice because it was not fitted and purchased for the child who will wear it.

In addition to safety gear, properly warming up and cooling down will help prevent sprains and strains. This practice can prevent any muscle or joint injuries. It is important to warm up before, and cool down at the end of every practice or game to keep yourself protected.

Other injuries, such as hairline fracture and tendonitis, are also common with children and teen athletes. In general, these injuries are thought of as common among adults rather than kids and teens. When a person overworks a specific part of the body, and does not get adequate rest between workouts, injury can happen. These are injuries that develop slowly so they are not identified right away.

It is recommended that children rest for about 10 uninterrupted weeks from a sport. Kids need to have time off to help prevent overusing muscles and joints and avoid injury. Remember that using the correct safety equipment, warming up and cooling down will also keep your kids safe from overuse, strains, and sprains.
