Menopause is a condition faced by women in their later years. This is when the ovaries stop producing eggs, the level of oestrogen drops and as time goes by, women receive their menses on irregular basis which also stops eventually. To counter this, one is supposed to buy lubricants and vaginal gels which moisturize the vagina making intercourse more pleasurable for the couple.

For those who are perimenopausal, they are advised to take low- dose oral contraceptives. These will assist in reducing hot flashes, vaginal dryness and control very heavy periods which sometimes come when one is not expecting. One may however be advised not to take the pill if they are smokers as this will have negative side effects on them.

For the longest time possible, paramedics have been using Hormone Replacement Therapy for controlling the symptoms of menopause as this was known to also prevent diseases such as those of the heart. Recent studies have however linked this to breast cancer hence they recommend that it should not be done often due to its side effects.

In conclusion, it is important for women to note that menopause is a natural occurrence which cannot be avoided. What can be controlled however is the tendency of women experiencing it early in life. To avoid this, they are supposed to lead healthy lifestyles. This includes avoiding smoking, eating low-fat diets, doing regular exercises and consumption of foods which are rich in vitamin D and calcium.
