Taking good care of your teeth is the surest way to maintain a healthy and attractive smile. In addition to seeing a Millbrae dentist twice yearly for routine check-ups and cleanings, you also have to make sure that you are brushing and flossing regularly. The following tips will help you avoid problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

People should be using toothbrushes with bristles that are soft. When these brushes are too hard, cleaning the teeth properly can be both painful and difficult. Hard bristles can make the gums puffy and sore and they are often way too abrasive. You can clean the teeth thoroughly with softer bristles while avoiding unnecessary pain and irritation.

Flossing is something that you should do twice per day. It should be done immediately after your first meal of the day and again before going to sleep. This is going to eliminate any debris that was not addressed by brushing.

After you have flossed your teeth, you should rinse your mouth out with an appropriate solution. This can be a special mouthwash that has been purchased at the store or it can be a saltwater rinse that you have made on your own at home. Like flossing, using a mouthwash is a great way to ensure that all trapped food particles have been cleared out of the mouth.

It is always a good idea to clean your teeth right after you have had a sticky or sweet snack. The goal of these efforts is to minimize the time that these foods spend on your natural tooth surfaces. Doing so is a great way to keep cavities at bay.

Another simple strategy for fighting tooth decay is to start oil pulling. This is done by swishing coconut oil or sesame oil around your mouth for twenty minutes. It helps keep the gums lubricated and it prevents gum disease while strengthening the teeth and building them up.
