Exposure to the sun can result in skin cancer, particularly for those with pale skins. Those with more melanin in their skins have far more protection against this reaction. Previously, the only way to bronze the skin without the sun was with DHA. Today, a natural tanning cream can produce improved results by inducing the skin's melanin production.

It's important that the tanning products one uses are approved by the FDA. They should have proven themselves safe and effective through extensive testing. Random groups need to be used and the study should have been a double blind one to ensure objectivity of the results. Chemicals that are applied to healthy skin should not cause damage.

Modern lotions still use DHA often but there are new chemicals that help products to produce a more natural looking tone. New chemicals and manufacturing methods have improved self tan results by reducing streaking. The illusion of a bronzed skin can also be created using temporary bronzers that are washed off after a few hours. There are colorants that are taken in pill form to change skin color but they are not FDA approved.

Bronzing products do not protect the skin against the harmful rays of the sun unless they contain a sun screen. However, most products are washed off within 12 hours at most, which means that they can only be used as a temporary measure to protect the skin. Those who wear sunless tans need to protect their skins with an excellent sun block.

The skin is made of several layers, but the two main sections are the deeper dermis and surface epidermis. DHA and similar chemicals react with the amino acids in the epidermis to produce depth of color. During the 1960s DHA was manufactured differently, which frequently resulted in uneven tone. Today, improvements have been made to this process and additional chemical additives have resulted in better results.

Sunless tans are able to produce a range of tones and depths. It is thus important to consider the type of skin one has when choosing a product. Usually those with olive skins need deeper tones whilst pale skins appear more natural when a lighter bronze is applied. Some lotions offer an instant tint that is intended to help make application more even. The temporary tint is washed away as soon as the semipermanent color has developed.

DHA remains the most common active ingredient in sunless tans. It interacts with the proteins in the surface layer of the epidermis. Since the cells in this layer are constantly dying, it's important to exfoliate to remove dry skin before applying a product. This ensures that the product reaches the living cells and prevents dry skin from absorbing too much pigmentation.

Tanning accelerators are an option that demands exposure to the sun. These lotions help the skin to produce more melanin when it is exposed to UV rays. These products don't protect against sun damage. In the coming years, scientists hope that they will be able to develop a natural tanning cream that increases melanin content without the need for UV exposure.
