A smile can take you places and it even acquires you new relations. For you to be able to smile confidently, you need to take care of your dental hygiene. Teeth discolorations are divided into three main categories. The first and most common among the three is extrinsic tooth discoloration. This occurs when the exterior part of your teeth is affected. This is also known as the enamel. The main culprits of discolored enamel are things that you may consume. Drinks like wine or cola and habits like smoking really affect the enamels color.

Then there is the opposite of extrinsic which is intrinsic. When one is suffering from intrinsic discoloration, the dentin in this case is affected. There are various causes that lead to dentin discoloration and most of them affect one during their early years. Using too much fluoride when young, trauma on the teeth, intake of tetracycline antibiotics by the child or the mum when pregnant with the child or when is born with a certain dentin genesis condition. When the dentin is discolored, it will show through the enamel.

As one advances in age, he/she gets teeth discoloration. This is mainly discoloration that results from the first two types of discoloration. For instance, due to age, the enamel gets thinner over the years. The result is dentin showing through the dentin causing tooth discoloration.

Brown or yellow spots or whitish streaks are all signs and symptoms that your teeth are discolored. When you pay your dentist a visit, do not expect numerous tests and visits before he tells you the solution. It only takes one visit for your dentist to look and advice you the solution.

For discoloration treatment, you can opt to do it at home or follow your the advice of your dentist. One method that your dentist can use is power bleaching. This is when the expert applies a powerful bleaching gel on the discolored tooth. The tooth becomes whiter in less than an hour. You will however be required to go for follow ups.

If the first treatment method is not good or convenient for you, there are two other methods you can choose from. The first is asking your dentist to give you age and mouth guard where you can carry out the treatment at home. Alternatively, you can go and buy teeth bleaching products without a prescription and use them at home. These two methods are not as efficient as the in-office one but they are a little bit cheaper.

Taking care of your teeth is one sure way of ensuring that you do not go through all the hustles of having to have the whitened again. This especially applies to cases where tooth discoloration can be avoided. This includes brushing your teeth as and when required. If you cannot avoid foods that discolor your teeth, make sure you brush or floss after their consumption.
