Spinal herniation is a very common problem that occurs anywhere along the spine and it mostly has effect on regions around the neck or on the lower back. This particular condition is also referred to as slipped vertebrae or even raptured vertebrae. Herniated disc or vertebrae tends to develop when a disc which is actually cushion shaped and usually located between vertebrae is removed out of position and then it gets pressed on adjacent nerves.

This kind of a condition is mostly caused by the overuse of trauma or even injuries on the spine. It is though very possible for it to develop due to the normal process of aging. It also suggested that there exists a certain genetic factors which significantly contributes to the degeneration of disc as well as herniation of these particular discs. In most instances the disc hibernation might heal after a short period of about six months especially if this condition is in the lower back. At other times surgery might be required in the instances where physical therapy, medication together with other types of treatment have failed.

There are several factors which are actually associated or related to this kind of a condition. The symptoms that are known to be associated with this kind of issue usually depends on the vertebrae level where this hibernation of disc mostly occurs and also whether a particular nerve tissue is basically being irritated or not. In most cases this particular condition does not have any noticeable symptoms.

But an individual suffering from this particular condition might suffer local pain at that particular spine level which is actually being affected. If this herniation is significantly large there is a high chance of disc tissue to press the nearby or surrounding spinal nerves which exit that particular vertebrae at the point of herniation. This might cause a shooting pain found in the distribution of that particular nerve and mostly it occurs on one particular side of body and it is commonly known as sciatica.

Disc herniation occurs happens when the outer part layers tears or raptures and then this substance which is gel like begins to seep into the spinal canal. The vertebrae has just an enough space which is used in housing the spinal fluid together with the spinal cord. When herniation happens this gel like element spills on spinal canal, a type of compression occurs on the vertebrae or at times on the nerves.

Intense devastating pain together with alteration especially in the sensation occurs. Additionally the gel like element which is inside the discs releases a certain chemical irritant which contributes to pain together with the inflammation of the nerve.

Most of times the neurologic examination reveals abnormal reflexes. Most often this particular pain may be elicited especially when a straight leg gets raised when an individual is either sitting or even lying. Several blood tests might be carried out so as to establish if there exists any kind of signs of infection or even inflammation.

As these particular discs continue to dry out, some microscopic tears as well as cracks starts to develop on the outer surfaces which makes it to become very weak, brittle and susceptible to an injury. The most common causes of this particular condition is the wear and tear, some repetitive kind of movements as well as spinal injury.
