Acupuncture is one method of therapy within in the modern medical field, though it has roots that go back much farther. This is a method of therapy and health management that entails stimulating specific areas and important regions of the body, most often with thin needles that are pricked into the skin.

In the vast majority of cases, acupuncture is used on a patient to alleviate pain or to help treat specific conditions. Developed thousands of years ago in ancient China, numerous studies and research experiments done today have shown that acupuncture therapy can help lower pain levels for patients and that the therapy also help relieve symptoms of other conditions such as stomach problems, minor heart issues, and side effects of many illnesses.

The October 2012 Archives of Medicine documents a research study that was done on 18, 000 patients to illustrate the effects of acupuncture. It was observed that patients who underwent this procedure reported significant improvement as compared to patients who just undertook modern medicines for their health conditions.

Studies are still being done to see if acupuncture can be used to manage a number of conditions. This includes conditions such as heart problems, asthma, dementia, arthritis, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome and allergies. Even cancer has been included in this list.

Even though medical professionals that are not into alternative medicine are skeptical if acupuncture really works, most of them remain open minded about it. Some of them are open to their patients using it, if it proves to be quite helpful to them in helping them to reduce pain and symptoms experienced.

More and more people, even those in mainstream medical fields are starting to embrace this procedure. They are starting to give it the seriousness that it deserves. They are starting to view it as an acceptable procedure that will help their patients to feel better.
