Drug abuse is rampant in the society today, the society has lost promising young people to substance abuse. One of the most abused drugs in recent history is heroin. Those who are caught using it are taken to a mandatory treatment for heroin addiction. This is to help salvage the men and women in the society who should be productive. This drug is very easy to get hooked to, it only starts with an injection and there is no turning back. If the problem is realized early enough, then treatment should be the next best thing.

Addiction to this horrible drug can be treated by a method known as a long-term residential treatment. It provides the care for the addict for twenty-four hours a day. It is not hospital based, it takes between six months to a year whereby the medication method is called therapeutic community. It is focused on reintegrating the addict back to the society as a responsible and accountable person. The addict is shown how to be productive and how to avoid falling back into temptation. Employment training is also given to them for their own good once out.

Short-term residential treatment can also be used whereby the addicts are briefly treated on an adapted twelve step approach. The treatment takes about three to six weeks and it is hospital based. Upon release, the addict has to go back for outpatient therapy and ensure that he or she attends a self-help group. The outpatient programs help him or her to remain intact and avoid relapse.

Outpatient programs is another way of helping a heroin addict. It is less expensive than the inpatient program. These programs are suitable for people who are employed. It focuses on remodeling the addict back to the society and teaches them on how to be a good citizen. It is effective when one dedicates himself or herself to the program.

Individual counselling is also a way to help out a heroin addict. One has a face to face meeting with a therapist and explains to him or her the reasons as to why you take drugs. This method can be confrontational at times because it involves a lot of back and forth between the counselor and the victim. Proper advice is given on how to maintain sobriety.

Group counselling can also be used to help substance abusers. This type of counselling involves bringing a couple of drug addicts together who are willing to quit. Under the guidance of a counselor, they share their problems and count on one another for recovery.

There are those who are affected by the drug and even after therapy, the urge to have some heroin becomes too strong. A medication is administered to them on a daily basis. This medicine is called methadone. It kills the nerve that creates the cravings.

Once an addict follows the above-mentioned steps, he or she is sure to avoid any relapses. Addiction is not good, it is an expensive lifestyle to maintain that could lead to being a criminal. It is important to lead a drug-free lifestyle.
