One type of care can alleviate pain in a natural way. It is based on the fact that compression of the intervertebral discs that lie between the vertebrae are responsible for the pain. It can be alleviated over time. It involves decompression by gently stretching out the spine.

Chiropractors use spinal decompression to alter the position of the spine by carefully controlled traction. Herniated discs with pressure exerted against them are relived of that pressure. By stretching the spine, it allows oxygen and fluids to flow into the center portion of the discs. This enables them to heal.

Surgical spinal decompression such as a laminectomy is an invasive procedure. Spinal decompression performed by a chiropractor is not. Before starting, the chiropractor will do a thorough evaluation to make certain it is appropriate for the client. When it is, the client is placed on a specially designed table. It is stationary on the top half, with a movable bottom section. It is adjusted by the chiropractor at different angles depending on the clients needs.

A harness is placed around the clients hips and attached to the end of the movable half. The chiropractor guides the motorized movement of the table to deliver intermittent intervals of traction and relaxation. The client feels a stretching sensation.

Each session takes a half hour to forty five minutes. They are scheduled within a month to six week period. Concurrent care may include electric stimulation, hot or cold applications or ultrasound.
