Sciatica is the condition in which one experiences pain consistently, with the pain escalating over time. The pain affects the legs, buttocks and lower back. There is also likely to be numbness and problems with leg movements. The condition is not a disease but symptom of underlying issues. It is the result of compression of spinal cord roots. On occasions, the best way to treat the condition is through rest and relaxation. One will need to relax for a few days. On some occasions, the doctor will recommend that one gets epidural steroid injection with cortisone or such similar drugs. These are injected into the area that is affected. The relief will be experienced instantly after one shot but there are cases in which one will need several treatments.

There is the option of using physical therapy. This will include such treatments as acupuncture, massage therapy and chiropractic therapy among others. It is however not a must that one works with physiotherapists one on one to alleviate the pain. The therapy may include simply taking short walks, stretching and always staying active. One will only stay active when the pain is not that much and is bearable.

Heat and ice are used in provision of relief from pain in the nerves. Any swelling and inflammation will be controlled too. When ice is used, the affected areas are numbed and the pain controlled. Heat will increase blood circulation in areas that are affected. As a result, there is speeding up of recovery process. Consequently, the use of ice and heat is done depending on an individual and their condition.

In instances when there is consistent and severe pain that lasts for a number of months but other techniques have failed to work, it may be necessary to use surgical options. Surgery involves removing the disk that causes pressure in the sciatic nerve. Being a surgical procedure, it will come with certain risks. It should therefore be done by doctors with the right experience.

In the event that the condition is not that serious, surgery will not be required. The pain will vary from one person to another. Surgery is only an option when the pain exceeds bearable limits. It is for this reason that treatment should be done before the pain worsens. In majority of the cases, people over 50 years are the most affected. Persons of other ages are not affected as much.

There are many centers from where one can get treatment. The internet has made it very easy to get treatment options. Fortunately, most of the treatment options are done from home.
