When someone has neck pain it can be attributed to whiplash injury, muscle strain or joint dysfunction due to the aging process. The cervical spine contains seven vertebrae with the atlas in the uppermost position. It supports the entire weight of the head which may weigh as much as a small bowling ball. The head jerks forward and back in a car crash and may result in a whiplash injury. A prominent Castle Rock Chiropractor can provide care leading to pain alleviation.

Most people are concerned with their health. They prefer not to take pain medicine because they are afraid of becoming addicted. The thought of having surgery is even less appealing. For them, chiropractic intervention is the perfect solution to combat the pain of a whiplash or other injury.

The cervical spine is adjusted with the client lying face down. The pressure of the adjustments is applied gently in a way that avoids forcing neck rotation or extension. After the accident it may be impossible to turn the head. Gradually the range of motion will increase.

The goal of the adjustments is pain reduction, increasing the range of motion and generally improving function to the neck. Working towards that goal is started only after a full examination. It includes a medical history, x-rays and a discussion of how the pain is perceived.

Two commonly misunderstood facts are that wearing a cervical support collar for an extended period of time is beneficial. Another is that bed rest should be extended. Both are misconceptions. Two days for wearing the collar and two or three days of bed rest are recommended.

Even though your range of motion is limited, you should move as much as you can. Between each two appointments to have adjustments and massage the more movement the better. If you cannot do anything strenuous, walking is better than sitting around. It will help to alleviate the pain quicker.
