Over the years, cosmetic dentistry has become very popular. Techniques such as tooth whitening, shaping and replacements are easily achieved. The dental practitioners have a wide range of techniques that they use for the solution of various dental problems. A cosmetic dentist in Chicago is easy to find, in addition to the fact that they solve literally every dental problem within their profession.

Before deciding on whether to seek the services of cosmetic dentists, it is important that one is aware of the benefits and risks if any. They should also know what to expect during every procedure. Such aspects as the costs to be incurred, the level of experience of the cosmetic dentist and whether or not there will be need for special maintenance afterward need to be considered.

One of the most sought after services is tooth whitening. Depending on how well teeth are taken care of, they could get stained or discolored. Among other factors, discoloration of teeth is caused by smoking, consuming coffee and tea and taking some medications. Bleaching is achieved through chemical processes in two main ways. The first way is through in-office treatment that is done at the office of the dental practitioner. There is also the option of doing it from home by following stipulated procedures and guidelines.

Through the creation of a custom mouthpiece, the cosmetic dental practitioner ensures that just the right amount of whitening solution gets to the teeth. Most people find it more convenient to do whitening from home. However, this would take between two and four weeks. In-office whitening on the other hand requires only about one hour.

After the whitening process, proper maintenance is required in order to maintain the whiteness, otherwise they are bound to get stained or discolored again. Owing to the fact that whitening products are not recommended for cleaning teeth, daily hygiene has to be upheld. The teeth need to be brushed a minimum of twice daily and flossed at least once daily.

Teeth which are largely spaced, chipped, cracked or broken can have their appearance improved through bonding. Materials for bonding are also used for purposes of filling small cavities and protecting roots that are exposed. Just a single office visit is sufficient to do the bonding. Veneers are custom shells that are made from porcelain or plastic. They are used for covering front sides of teeth in order to change their color or shape.

Crowns are also called caps and are used to fully cover teeth and restoring their normal shape and appearance. Crowns can be made from several materials, including resins and ceramic materials. Because they are a bit costly, crowns are only recommended in cases where other techniques cannot be effective. For improvement of general appearance of teeth, enamel shaping and contouring is used. It is used for altering length, shape and position of teeth.

A cosmetic dentist in Chicago also uses braces and bridges to improve the smiles of patients. Braces apply slight pressure to teeth and reposition them slowly over a period of about one to three years. On the other hand, bridges are used for replacement of missing teeth with artificial ones.
