The tan effect is mainly felt in the second layer of the skin.

This is by stimulating the melanomas to produce melanin, a skin pigment. The melanin that is produced during this time is what causes the tan. This process takes some bit of time. That is the very reason why one can not achieve a tan within a day. To get the melanomas, it takes one about two days or so. After that, the melanin production takes place within a few hours. When one gets used to this process, it takes around seven consecutive days to achieve the final desired results.

Sunbathing has its own harmful effects to the one doing so. Its effects however depend on several factors. The time that one spends basking is the main factor.
