Being exposed to trauma at any age or any time in your life will present you with a number of different problems. Some people are able to cope a lot better, depending on the support they receive and the way in which they handle the situation. However, this doesn't apply to everyone. Of course, you have to find the right person to talk to. A good relationship needs to built between the patient and counsellor in order for this to be successful. One will find that it can time to express oneself. But counsellors are experienced wit this and will use various techniques to help the patient come out of their shell. Things like creative therapy or even pet therapy can be helpful when someone has faced trauma and is unable to talk about what has happened to them. This is also good for a child to talk about feelings that they are going through. They may not be ready to talk to a counsellor. However, they will be able to draw and paint, using the creative side of the brain which helps them to focus on the present moment.

Trauma can range from witnessing the death of a loved one to severe abuse that you may have suffered as a child. Whether this is minimal or something greater, you need to talk about this. Some people block this out of their life, but always find that it will come to the surface later on. It can even come up during the therapy sessions.

It is important to talk about these things. When you begin to talk, you will find that you will eliminate some of the panic. PTSD also takes place with victims of abuse. Sometimes it is more complex, such as when a child has been exposed to abuse on a continuous basis over a duration of time. It can also be the same as a soldier who has been held at a prisoner of war camp.

This is good for children because they will usually have difficulty talking about what has happened. This is especially because of the fact that a child would have been betrayed by an adult, and they may be intimidated talking to another adult. A play therapist can be helpful in the process.

One on one therapy is something that many people prefer because it is confidential and people feel safe in this space. However, a lot of people who find themselves in this situation will have trust issues. They will take some time to connect with the psychologist. Of course, this is only natural, considering what they have been through. They may consider another form of therapy in combination to this which will help them develop this relationship.

A trauma therapist may also have to refer their patient somewhere else. For example, a psychiatrist may have to prescribe the patient antidepressants are anxiety tablets. This can be necessary should the symptoms be severe and the patient is struggling to cope during the day at work or with relationships. The medication will keep him or her focused. However, one shouldn't see this as the cure.
