Generally, confusion has existed in trying to understand what disc herniation is. Some medics say that it is an abnormal condition while others give different information that is squarely a normal condition in human beings. It is basically a situation in which some soft tissues in the jointed bones push through the openings in the hard bones. Therefore, herniated disc is mostly cartilages overgrowing and forming a numb outside a joint. They are mostly found in the neck and lower part of the spine.

It is mostly brought about by activities that go the wrong side of a joint when done repetitively and others are brought about by gene formation and disorders while others by lifestyle. When a certain lifestyle is adopted by an individual and the activities happen on a daily basis, this will eventually crop.

Some are painful and medically not fit for a person while others do not have any impact on certain individuals. They are even never noticed. The ones that cause pain is because where they arise, they tend to affect nerve performance. Nerves are responsible for stimuli transmission; therefore, when tampered with they make one feel painful. The pain is determined by the size of the disc, injury caused, as well as the condition location. Sciatica is an example of this condition in the lumbar vertebrae.

Muscular problems are also caused by these conditions. If a disc is located near or adjacent to a muscle, a normal performance of the muscle is altered. This is because muscle ligaments and tendons are altered in sequence and movement causing weaknesses as well as spasms, reflexes, and pain.

This condition to a larger extent negatively affects feet and hands by making them numb. When this happens, these parts become less effective as their normal performance has been altered. It is even more serious and painful when it affects the neck. It causes a stiff neck thus affecting the normal rotation and movement of the neck and its surrounding.

However, there are different ways of treating or containing this condition. They are of two categories that is, medical and physical therapies. On the side of physical therapies, one is advised to carry out aerobic activities for almost an hour every day. This makes cardiovascular circulations improve. Still, one is advised to use a heating pad which relaxes and soothes the infections in the skin.Chiropractic techniques that include massage, stretching exercises for flexibility are also part and parcel of physical therapy.

On medication, it includes the application of non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory relievers as well as surgeries. These relievers relieve any type of pain as well as relaxing the affected muscle or area. Medication, on the other hand, includes therapeutic ultrasound for treating sprains and strains among other injuries. Injection of epidural steroid containing cortisone is very effective for relieving neck, legs, arms and any other joint pain.

Surgical operations in the spinal cord and other affected areas is also a way of treating and correcting the condition. This is done by specialists in orthopedics who deal with bones and muscle operations. Neurosurgeons specialize in treating nervous system problems the same as neurologists. Others include general doctors.
