Imagine that you cannot see the world, and there is no chance for you on seeing it. It does not feel good, for eyes play an essential role in life. People do so many activities like reading, watching movies or television programs, surfing the internet, texting, driving and many more using the eyes, seeing everything that comprises the world is perhaps the greatest gift.

However, there are many factors that are affecting the eyesight, and aging is one of them that causes cataracts. Since it is inevitable and millions of Americans at the age of 40 and above are affected by these, a lot of people have been going to centers like cataract surgery San Antonio centers, such as Focal Point Vision and South Texas Institute for eyes. Some of those leading cities for people to find the premier surgeons and facilities are Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, Miami, Fla, Wilmer Eye Institute, John Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD, and Wills Eye Hospital, . Philadelphia, Pa.

Throughout the aging of individuals, the risk of having a cataract is also increasing. Still, researchers across the globe have recognized the other factors of having this, like alcohol, smoking, hypertension, family history, obesity, eye injury before, previous surgery of the eyes, and UV radiation. It can be determined by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist in an eye examination, symptoms such as double vision, blurry vision and colors become somehow faded are also considered in diagnosing.

Cataract is a clouding of the lens eyes that would affect the vision of anyone who has it. It may grow larger, however, it would not spread to both eyes. Older people are commonly affected by this and more than half of the Americans have a cataract.

During the medical procedure, the cloudy lens is removed and an artificial lens is being replaced, and topical anesthetic or local anesthetic is used to relax the nerves. This artificial lens is called an IOL or IntraOcular Lens. It is made of biocompatible material that will stay permanently.

This procedure uses an operating room so there is no need on staying in a hospital. The surgery usually does not take an hour. But in case you have got cataracts in your both eyes, you will have another operation because they cannot be done in the same time.

Just like any other surgeries, this also has risks. These risks include infection, bleeding, inflammation, swelling, retinal detachment, loss of vision, and glaucoma. In cases like these, go to a surgeon for it to be examined.

After the surgery, the surgeon will study the possible side effects of complications and give some guidelines in case of emergency. Normally, there is no pain after the surgery, but you will be wearing a protective shield for the eyes at night for a week. Follow up check ups might also be done to make sure of your condition.

Cataract surgery is a common surgery in the USA. It is proven to be effective and safe for most cases. Most people usually get a better vision after the operation is successfully done.
