Many whiplash sufferers suffer from severe headaches after their accident. Whiplash is not always recognized immediately after the accident and this non-recognition often allows the problem to become worse because the sufferer does not seek medical advice. New Mexico chiro specialists have adequate experience in handling this type of injury. They are also able to offer sufferers a range of pain and discomfort relief methods for their injuries.

Accident victims often suffer whiplash when they have experienced a forceful movement of the head and neck. The sudden movement of the neck in opposite directions may cause damage to the muscles and the ligaments in the neck and shoulder area. It is a common belief that whiplash is only suffered during car accidents. This is not the case as sportspersons can experience this type of injury during events and workers may experience it at their places of work.

The most unfortunate issue regarding this type of injury is that it is not always noticeable directly after the accident. This results in sufferers not seeking appropriate medical advice. The delay in acquiring medical help often worsens the symptoms and the sufferer's condition may be much worse once medical assistance is obtained.

The most immediate symptom of whiplash is severe neck pain, along with restricted neck movement. You may suffer pain in your shoulder blades, as well as headaches. The tension that is present in your neck and shoulders is what causes these particular symptoms.

During the accident, it is often the case that ligaments and muscles in the neck region are torn. This causes the severe restriction of neck movement. The other symptoms that may be present include pain in the lower back, pain in the muscles in your back and fatigue. It is recommended that you pay a visit to a New Mexico chiro if you are suffering from these symptoms after an accident.

It is also possible that this injury type has caused rupture or movement of one or more of the discs in your spine. The force of the event may have pushed the spinal vertebrae out of the normal position. If this has occurred, the nerves in the area may be pinched which will cause more discomfort and pain.

When you visit your chiropractor, a detailed assessment of your symptoms will be done to find out the exact place where you are experiencing discomfort or pain. Diagnostic imaging tests may have to be undertaken to find the exact cause of your suffering. The x-rays or scans will also indicate any added injuries you may have suffered during the accident.

When the assessment has been finalized, your chiropractor will commence treatment by using spinal manipulation techniques to free any trapped nerves in your spine. You will be offered gentle massage to relieve any tension that you may be felling in your muscles and joints. The massage therapy will be used in your neck and shoulders to relieve pain. This therapy will also allow you to get relief from any inflammation or swelling that may be present in that area. You may be offered alternative pain relief methods by your New Mexico chiro, such as acupressure. It may be necessary for you to make use of a neck brace for a certain period of time after the accident.
