Lasik in Singapore has become increasingly popular. For over 20 years, over 13 million individuals have already gone through Lasik. But, what is it exactly? Does this type of surgery really work? If it really works, what sorts of benefits does it offer?

Lasik, short for Laser-Assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is a famous laser eye surgery performed by an eye surgeon to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. During this procedure, an eye specialist uses a specialized laser to reshape the cornea or the transparent part of the person's eye. When this is completely performed, the cornea can do a better job of focusing the light that will enter the eyes and improves visual acuity.

Before Lasik is done, the patient will be asked to stop wearing glasses or contact lenses for 2 to 4 weeks. This is suggested so as not to alter the natural form of the cornea. The eye specialist is going to perform an extensive eye exam. This is done to ensure that the person's eyes are healthy enough to go through Lasik surgery.

The ophthalmologist will evaluate the person's cornea's shape and thickness, pupil size, refractive errors and any existing eye conditions. He will also note the general health history of the person who will undergo Lasik as well as ask for any drugs or medications you are currently taking in order to determine if you're a suitable candidate for the surgery. Other than that, he will assess the moistness of the patient's eyes and may provide a precautionary treatment to reduce any risk of developing dry eyes right after LASIK surgery is performed.

Before this type of refractive surgery is performed, the eye specialist may also give a specific medication to the person who is about to go through the procedure. He will also apply some eye drops that will numb the patient's eyes. These will help the patient to relax and not to experience any discomfort while Lasik surgery is being performed.

During Lasik, the eye will be placed under a laser and a lid speculum to keep the eyelids open. The eyeball is then firmly held in place with the use of a suction ring, and then the cornea of the eye is lifted and flattened. Once this is done, the eye surgeon then cuts an ultra-thin flap in the eye's cornea and folds it back.

After that, an ultra violet beam reshapes the cornea. This will be based on the person's pre-operative eye exam. Then, the flap is replaced serving as a natural bandage. The whole procedure only takes less than half an hour on both eyes.

LASIK has a very high success rate. According to reports, more than 90% of patients say that they've gained the vision they're longing for right after the procedure. They've also expressed how dramatic the changes they've experienced due to the reduction in their contact lens and eyeglass dependence. A lot of them claim that they don't need to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses anymore. Most patients confirm they have not felt pain during LASIK and have returned to work the day after the surgery.

With all of these, there is no question why Lasik in Singapore has turned out to be really popular. So, if you're suffering from any types of refractive error like myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, Lasik may probably work for you. On the other hand, refractive surgery such as Lasik is not for everyone. Still, it's best to discuss all factors involved right before undergoing such procedure with a surgical eye specialist.
