The old method of tanning, by laying in the sun, has become unpopular in recent years. This can be contributed to the discovery that too much sun exposure poses a significant health risk. However, the market is full of alternatives like lotions, creams, gels and self tanning spray kits. Self tanning spray kits have become a popular choice for sunless tanning. They are reasonably priced, easy to use and the results are nothing less than professional grade. Once the spray is applied and dries, the process is complete.

The chemical compound dihydroxyacetone is what triggers the tanned look of the skin. When it mixes with aminos in the skin, a reaction begins that starts this process. The FDA evaluated the use of dihydroxyacetone and deemed it safe for use. It do not cause any significant effects and provides a safer alternative to exposing the skin UVs.

Self tanning spray kits create a high quality tan without any experience needed. By doing nothing more than following the instructions and implementing a few tips, anyone should be able to apply the tanner themselves. No assistance should be required, if done correctly.

Testing on the skin should always be the first step to take place. By spraying a tiny area of the skin and then waiting, one can determine if any rash is going to occur. This is also helpful in gauging how well a particular product works for an individual.

Tanning is more effective when any dead skin has been removed from the body first. A quick exfoliation treatment will take care of this. When tanners are applied over dead skin, they become patchy. Applying these products on fresh skin, however, allows the tanner to be absorbed better and the tan lasts a much longer time.

The skin should also be moisturized after exfoliation. Moisturizer should be added a couple of hours before using self tanning spray kits. This is so it has time to soften the skin.

Darker colors should be worn during application. Self tanning spray kits often create stains, so darker colors will hide those if they do happen. Light colored clothing can be completely ruined.

Another useful option is gloves for using self tanning spray kits. The hands have a tendency to become very dark while applying these products. By using gloves, this problem is resolved. Alternatively, a user can wash their hands immediately after application to prevent unnatural darkening.

When using self tanning spray kits, application should be done evenly. A towel near by can be used for any drips so they can be wiped away before drying. This is important for preventing a need to reapply.

No movement should occur for a minute after self tanning spray kits are applied. Joints can rub and causes patches if movement takes places before drying is complete. This can mean the whole application might need to be redone.

Most importantly, always wear sunblock when going out into the sun. Even though almost all self tanning spray kits contain SPF protection, it is always best to add extra. SPF wears away over time, even before the tan is gone.
