The recovery process is usually characterized by rational decisions that are made by addicts. These decisions combined with various methodologies translate to healthy lives. Self awareness is always the first step on how to start living sober because it unveils the true nature of ourselves that we did not know in the past.

The very first step is to commit oneself because change at individual level starts with the right state of mind. Commitment ensures that you stay clean and avoid people and places that may be of temptation. Keeping your mind occupied with stuff also ensures that you do not have time for thinking about substance abuse.

Attainable goals and objectives should also be set as a recovery procedure to help monitor on the progress one makes on a daily basis. Your long time goal as an addict is to completely stay sober while the short term ones can be drinking more water each day as a form of hydration.

Reading books with sobriety as the subject matter is a very effective technique that most addicts used today. Technology has largely contributed to accessibility of appropriate literature material on life skills. One can simply find them in libraries, rehab centers and on the internet.

There are several rehabilitation centers that have been set up with the goal of transforming the lives of addicts. These institutions have monitoring programs which ensure that the victims live healthy and reformed. Once an individual is enrolled, he meets other people with the same condition and it is through sharing that he fully recovers.

Networking with people around you is also another way of ensuring you live sober. Bonding with others is aimed at achieving psychological comfort needed in the recovery process. According to psychology, people who share their problems with others are likely to live healthy and normal lives.

One can also indulge in activities he is passionate about for they will help in boosting his spirit. This translates to good moods which essentially makes the patient to forget about drugs by always staying happy. Music and other forms of art like poetry and acting, are very therapeutic because they speak to our innermost souls.

In a nutshell, it should be noted that the process of deciding to live sober is an individual decision that varies from one human being to the other. Therefore, right choices translate to positive and sustainable living.
