Your baby is due in a few weeks time and the worry sets in. You have not chosen a pediatrician for your unborn baby. As such, you do not know what to do in case he/she falls sick immediately after birth. In order to avoid this scenario, experts usually advise that you not only look for a pediatrician who is competent but one who is acceptable to you as well. After all, this will be your health care soul mate for years. He/she will be the one you can when child has high fever and will not stop yelling. The problem for most parents however lies in finding a good pediatrician. Prior to settling on any pediatrician southern Indiana parents will need to consider the following factors for good choices.

For a start, you may want to ask for referrals from other parents. Good old word of mouth from someone you trust is probably the best approach when looking for any physician. No matter what medical school the doctor graduated from, it normally boil down to patients report. As usual, you would also expect a good doctor to have the most referrals from his/her past patients. As such, if a pediatricians name keeps on popping up, chances are that he/she is a good one.

Before you make a choice, you need to make a call to your insurance provider to find out if the doctor you are interested in is indeed in your plan. If you choose a doctor who is not in your plan, you will have to pay the consultation fee as well as treatment fee from your pocket. In such a case, your insurance cover will not have helped you at all.

Duration that the physician has been in this practice is also very important. You will obviously have peace of mind if you know that you r newborn is being handled by someone who has experience than one who is just starting his/her career. An ideal pediatrician would be one with at least ten years of active practice under his/her belt.

Compatibility with your child is another important factor. Remember that the doctor you choose is likely to be the one attending to your child until he/she reaches adolescence stage. Because of this, you should look for a doctor that your child can get along with for all this time. If they are not compatible with each other, you may be forced to change doctors along the way. This is usually not recommended.

It is also a legal requirement for all physicians, pediatricians included to be board registered before they start attending to patients. This is one way that the authority uses to weed out unqualified and incompetent physicians. Because of this, it is very important to verify that your potential doctor has a valid license issued by the relevant authority.

Location of the pediatric clinic is also important. You definitely do not want to drive for several hours to see your doctor especially when your child is in pain. The doctors working hours also matter. Good pediatricians usually have someone at the office twenty four hours. This is to ensure that all emergencies are attended to.

With these tips in mind, finding a good doctor for your baby should never be a problem. It is however advisable that you start the search early as well. In fact, the best time to start the search for a pediatrician is during your pregnancy.
