Physicians that major in provision of meadical services for common medical conditions are called primary care physicians. Usually, people use the abbreviation PCP when referring to them. Primary care physicians are the pillar of the healthcare community and they provide very many medical services to people in need. In most instances, these practitioners are normally doctors, but they can also be physician assistants or nurse practitioners. It is therefore important for PCPs to be able to diagnose and treat numerous medical conditions. It is also important that they conduct medical examinations and do blood screening on their patients.

Many doctors can work as primary care physicians. Usually, people are given several options to choose from by this. Some PCPs are obgyns, nurse practitioners, internists, geriatricians, pediatricians, family practitioners and many others. Family doctors are doctors that have accomplished a residency in family practice and are board-certified or board-eligible in this field. Their scope of practice includes minor surgery, obstetrics, children, and adults.

Many insurance plans usually place some restrictions on the kind of practitioner one can choose to be their PCP. Other insurance plans encourage people to choose specific providers by providing financial incentives. As such, it is important to find out what the insurance company is willing to cover before choosing a PCP to work with.

When one is choosing a PCP, they must consider many factors. The friendliness of the office of the PCP is among these factors. One must choose to work with an office that is friendly to its customers. Also, they must be good at returning and picking calls from customers. They must also have convenient office hours so that clients can contact the office with ease.

The practitioner that one chooses to work with should also be friendly and easy to reach whenever there is need. It is important for the practitioner to be willing to share their contact information, especially their phone number to make communication easier. Some practitioners choose to make all communications formal while others make communications friendly and warm. Thus, one should choose what suits them best.
