Acupuncture is a very old form of healing that was in use more than 2, 500 years ago in ancient China. Regardless of this method being very old, it has become widespread in the modern society a lot. It is currently being used widely in the United States, the UK, Canada and many other Western countries. The popularity of this method continues to grow every day and more and more people adopt it. When one needs to Study acupuncture Canada should be visited.

Millions of people use this approach in the US to cure a variety of conditions that affect them every year. The origin of the word acupuncture is traced to the Latin language. Acus being the first part means needle whereas pungere means to prick. This treatment approach uses needles that are so thin like a hair strand.

The needles have to be placed carefully along the spinal cord. The needles are not placed without an order, rather, the placement is done in acupuncture points. Once the needles have been placed in position, they are manipulated manually using hands. Alternatively, the manipulation can be done using electrical stimulation in what is called electroacupuncture. Other forms of energy that can be used for manipulation include pressure, laser, and heat energy.

The use of pressure for manipulation of needles is called acupressure while the use of heat is called moxibustion. The manipulation of the needles is done with the intention of realigning the vital energies of the body. Once the vital energies are realigned and back to normal flow, it is believed that various medical conditions are healed.

The spreading adoption of this method in the United States and across other western countries has resulted into lots of clinical trials being done. Also, more researchers and scientists are dedicating much of their time on conducting researches in this field. The aim of the clinical trials and researches is to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture. To add on this, lots of academic institutions including universities are currently offering courses on this subject.

Acupuncture as a practice was only known to the US people after the 1950s. At that time, the practice was known to a very small number of people in the US and those who had the knowledge of it never took it seriously. It was difficult for people to study this field as there were less practitioners at the time. In 1972, president Nixon however made a change to everything when he visited China.

The visit sparked a lot of interest in traditional Chinese medicine among many Americans. Also, as the number of Americans that are diagnosed with chronic illnesses increase, more interest in alternative medicine increased. This newly founded interest caught the attention of the scientific community. The political arena was later dragged into the debate and politicians were forced to act.

The Office of Alternative Medicine after being established took note of alternative medical forms in the US. The US congress established this office in 1992. The Institute of Health in 1997 then published a national census. The census found that acupuncture was efficient in treating various conditions, including post-surgical pain, vomiting, and nausea.
