Using alternative therapies that can uncover potential health issues is becoming accepted practice. A number of these methods have been around for centuries. Surprisingly enough, your ancestors might have had answers to many of the health issues you face today. Ancient civilizations had no technology or specialized equipment to analyze ailments. Instead they relied on things like iridology techniques to uncover the underlying causes of the most common physical problems.

If eyes are the windows into the soul, ancient man concluded the iris and its coloration was an extension of one's brain and an indication of the health of the rest of the body. Modern iridology came into vogue in the latter part of the nineteenth century when a Hungarian doctor noticed a correlation between certain streaks in his patient's irises and the physical problems he was having. The doctor created a chart that believers use now to correspond changes in one's iris with physical changes in the body that might indicate issues like inflammation and hardening of the arteries.

Responsible professionals want patients to understand that studying the iris is not a means of diagnosing illnesses. Evaluating irises can not tell doctors their patients have diabetes or cancer. Studies of changes in iris coloration does show experienced professionals the genetic tendencies, or predisposition, one may have to certain illnesses. Iridology is a way to predict potential problems.

Iris examinations are fairly simply and free of pain. A new patient fills out a medical history and lifestyle form before having the examination. The process itself is non-invasive. Technicians use irisodoscopes, which are like magnifying glasses, to make an examination of the eye. They often use cameras to take photos of the iris. These go into a computer for further analysis.

You should be careful taking health advice from anyone. If you wish to have your iris analyzed, you should do some research first. You will find a complete list of certified iridologists online at the Iridology Practitioner Association website.

These techniques are not without controversy. There are studies where a number of iridologists examined patients who all had specific ailments. They could not come to a unanimous conclusion about what the ailment was. There were also differing opinions among the various iridologists as to the what the ailment actually was. Other studies have shown that this technique is effective as a tool to help doctors evaluate certain conditions and diseases.

Most professionals agree that individuals interested in more information about these techniques should steer clear of disreputable practitioners advertising the ability to diagnose serious illnesses by studying the eye. Many of them claim to be able to uncover the presence of parasites and cancers by examining an individual's iris. These people are a waste of time and money and are making dangerous claims.

Most professionals are in agreement that an experienced practitioner can examine a patient's iris and arrive at some general conclusions. This makes iridology an effective screening tool. It can be used by a primary physician, in addition to traditional diagnostic tools, in the examination process.
