When it comes to massage, there are different types and styles. The most common being Swedish, Shiatsu and Deep Tissue. While Deep Tissue is used in rolfing therapy San Diego, it is much different than massage. For, rolfing is considered an alternative medicine used to provide structural reintegration of the body.

Often known as "the recipe, " among massage therapists and other professionals, the treatment consist of 10 sessions in which a provider manipulates the body in different ways. Most often considered a cross between massage and chiropractic services, the practice is different from either of these practices. As rolfing is considered a blend of fringe medicine and science, it remains controversial.

Creator Ida Rolf bases the science behind the practice as relating to the energy field which surrounds the body as being part and parcel to the gravitational forces of the earth. As such, individuals working in this area use a combination of body manipulation and manual therapy massage. During which, it is believed the energy of the body realigns with the gravitational fields of the earth, thus providing health benefits in the process.

While often considered a practice to relax body, mind and soul, traditional massage can often be extremely relaxing. In fact, many recipients of 80-120 massage sessions often fall asleep during the process. While this is the case, rolfing can often be painful, resulting in residual pain which can last for a few days. In addition, the process has also been known to bring emotional issues to the surface.

In more basic terms, the creator of this treatment often considered a pseudo science, believes the body is part and parcel to the earth. As such, by pulling the body toward that energy, there is a healing effect. While this is the case, as with many other forms of natural or holistic medicine, there remain a number of skeptics.

Most providers believe as Rolf, that the body is in a continuous struggle with regards to gravity. As this is the case, gravity tends to shorten the fascia which can often lead to a number if diseases, illnesses and disorders. In order to combat the possibility and potential of these conditions, rolfing is used to motivate movement and eliminate pain by lengthening the fascia.

Once lengthened and reorganized, the tissue can then allow providers to restore movement and eliminate pain. After which, the entire body is often in a healthier place and can better fight off illness and other conditions. In most cases, individuals can complete the process during the initial ten sessions. Whereas, some individuals might need to schedule additional appointments on a routine basis depending on the severity of the issue which created the need for rolfing.

Often referred to as a form of energy or bodywork, or massage, rolfing does much more for the body than any of these practices. In fact, the practice has become so well known that a number of osteopaths are now using the practice as of part of different treatment plans. Whereas, there are also a number of chiropractors whom combine adjustments, exercise therapy and rolfing when treating a number of different issues from scar tissue to bodily function.
