The word of perfumes and colognes is huge. There are all numerous brands available and each product will have a distinctive scent. Choosing the perfect cologne to wear is therefore not as simple as may assume. Scents differ as day and night and while some make a statement of good fashion taste, others can enhance your sexual appeal. Then again, there are scents that lift moods and others evoke fond memories. If you are shopping for cologne for men and women, there are some basic tricks you should have up your sleeve.

You need to get well acquainted with various fragrances for you to know which one suits you best. Take note of your needs and also your personal style before you make a pick. Choosing the ideal scent is arguably the most challenging thing to do and you may want to understand some basics before you begin shopping.

For you to have an easier time when shopping, you should understand that perfumes and colognes are made of three notes. They include the middle, base and top notes. These notes are designed to work together to create a specific scent. When shopping for floral perfumes for instance, you could find a product that contains rose, geranium or gardenia scent notes. Fruit scented perfumes will on the other hand have undertones like apple and citrus. You can also find exotic fragrances which contain spicy notes like cinnamon or star anise just to mention a few.

Musk scents are heavier and they contain a tone that is more masculine. They are therefore mainly preferred by men. Whether you want fragrance for women, men or unisex products, the importance of understanding the notes should not be underestimated. Keep in mind that it is the base notes that linger around for longer.

It remains imperative for you to also make your choice depending on the concentration levels of a product. There are four levels of concentration and the higher the level, the more costly a product will be. Colognes with high concentration create a powerful scent that lasts longer.

Products that have the highest concentration levels will go by the name parfum or perfume. Their fragrance can last the whole day. The next concentration level will produce eau de parfum products. Their scents can last for around six hours. From this point, you get the eau de toilette products which are commonly found in local stores and are fairly affordable. Products with the lowest concentration levels go by the name eau de cologne and their scents will not last longer than 2 hours.

It is vital to test a product before purchasing it. This is regardless of the scent or even the concentration levels that you choose. Start by doing a sniff test and decide whether the cologne is something you would enjoy wearing. If it is, spray a small bit of the product on your wrist. Wait for several minutes and sniff it again.

The majorities of land based stores have testers that you can use. You will however need to be extra cautious when shopping online. In this case, you must know your products or at least know what to look for in the descriptions of various fragrances that are available.
