The spongy soft discs that lie between the bones in the spine serve as shock absorbers. Any movement that shifts the position of the body ordinarily exerts pressure on the vertebrae. The discs prevent that from being painful or damaging. As a leading Noblesville chiropractor will tell you, if one or more is herniated, it can result in serious to excruciating pain.

If a disc is bulging, it extrudes between the vertebrae. The herniated disc is a far more serious condition. It occurs if there is a crack in the fibrous shell that contains the gel-like inner portion. This lets a part of the soft inner cushion protrude. Some refer to it as being slipped or ruptured.

In some cases, the herniation does not cause pain. In others the pain is excruciating. When the person lifts something heavy or bends down in an awkward position, it can lead to a hernia. For this reason, lifting with the legs is useful advice.

A herniation in the neck often causes hurt in your shoulder and one or both arms. If it is in the lower back, you can expect it to hurt in the buttocks and legs. Whichever spinal nerve root is compressed determines where the numbness and pain will be felt.

There are people who think they are being brave by ignoring pain. This is not a wise thing to do, however. When something hurts, your body is alerting you to the fact that something is wrong. The chiropractor is the health care practitioner to consult regarding any spinal abnormalities.

During the appointment, your spine will be thoroughly examined and evaluated. There will be an in-depth discussion of your symptoms, such as when it started, whether it occurs intermittently or continually and how much it interferes with your normal activities. You may be forced to miss work, for example. Chiropractic care is very effective for alleviating the pain of a herniated disc.
