In order to be licensed to practice cosmetic surgery, doctors must go through intensive training in all of the different types of procedures they will be delivering to patients. New procedures are set out from time to time from different associations doctors belong to, and they must adhere to the new policies. These associations have different mission statements and mandates which are all eventually aimed at one goal - providing the best patient treatment that is available.

Here, we will examine the mandates and missions of associations such as these.

1. (ASPS) American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Founded in 1931, this society has over 7000 members and represents a majority of board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States who are trained to perform a variety of cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries.

The ASPS has a mandate that aspires to have the highest possible standards of practice and training for plastic surgeons, and to encourage the newest scientific discovery in this area. They help to oversee that the training standards are intensive and as beneficial as possible for those cosmetic treatment providers to be certified. The safety of the patient is the highest concern.

The Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF) mandate is to promote development and research, to help increase the level of care for patients, and they are associated and cooperate with the ASPS. Funding is received from clinical trials networks, grants, and training programs for these projects. In addition to this, the ASPS is also part of a variety of worldwide networks that are aimed at providing education and support to plastic surgeons.

2. American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS)

It appears that the AAFPRS is the biggest association that specializes in facial plastic surgery in the world. It is a big part of the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons board of governors.

in 1964, the AAFPRS was founded, and is an independent professional society. Facial plastic surgery of the highest quality for patients is the mission of this society. This was to be achieved through education and dissemination of information amongst professionals and also by establishing certain professional guidelines and standards. They maintain a commitment to humanitarian services as well, and they seek to have facial plastic surgery to be included as an industry with the highest standards of ethics. Members of these organizations therefore have a clear idea about the newest advancements in techniques and standards to enhance the safety and level of care patients receive because of these guidelines.

3. American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS)

The ASAPS was founded in 1967 and consists of over 2500 members who are plastic surgeons from the United States and other countries.

The mission of the ASAPS is to promote advancement of the science of plastic surgery along with safe clinical practice amongst practicing plastic surgeons. Research, ongoing education and medical training, conferences and meetings detailing science and new data are the main ways this organization achieves their goals. The biggest reason for these associations is to see that patients receive the highest quality care and safety available, and to set a code of conduct and ethics for the healthcare professionals involved.
