The type of chest pain which is known as Angina often results when there is a shortage of blood supply to the heart. It is usually caused by a blockage of the coronary arteries (the main artery for the heart) or lack of oxygen in the blood supplied it. It can also be called ischemic heart disease. This condition comes with coronary artery disease and is an indicator that a heart attack can occur anytime.

It has been discovered to be the cause of about 37% deaths in the US every year while reports of at least 10 million cases have been recorded. This disease is so bad that it makes the sufferer feel intense pain. The problem reduces when the victim takes a bold step to meet a doctor who is a consultant in angina relief.

Symptoms of this disease are chest pain, nausea, sweating, tightness of the chest, back pain, pain in the left shoulder and arm and abdominal pain, as seen in female patients. Coronary artery disease which is the underlying factor is a heart disease in which the heart blood vessels are narrower than normal thereby reducing the blood supply to the heart muscles.

This disease worsens because of low supply of oxygen sent to the myocardium. Since the myocardium depends on oxygen for respiration, it has to switch to the anaerobic mode in order to survive. Anaerobic metabolism yields hydrogen ions and carbon dioxide in the end and these are beneficial for increasing the size of the vessels. Unfortunately, the metabolites also cause an increased stimulation of the heart nerves thereby leading to more pain sensation.

Coronary artery disease is primarily caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the narrowing of the lumen by the deposition of cholesterol on the walls of the vessels. With time, the arterial wall becomes fibrotic and it is referred to as atherosclerotic plaque. Atherosclerotic plaque, over time, can totally occlude blood vessels if allowed.

To stop angina, these factors that cause it must be treated. Four types of this sickness exist and they are stable, unstable, microvascular and variant. Patients with a stable type experience symptoms only when the heart is forced to do more work. This is the reason why it is advisable for people to visit their doctors before embarking on any kind of intense exercise. Resting and feeding properly can also reduce symptoms.

Drugs can also be used to get relieved from stable ischemic heart disease. A good one to take is glycerol nitrate and vasodilators. The vasodilators increase the diameter of the vessel so as to make more oxygen flow in and reduce the tendency for anaerobic metabolism which will lead to more pain. Care must be taken to avoid anything that has cholesterol. This same therapy is suitable for the other kinds of angina.

The worst type of angina is the unstable form. Persons with this have higher risks of heart attack. Sometimes, resting is not even sufficient to calm the symptoms. The most effective forms of treatment for this type are angioplasty and surgery. Abstaining from fat-rich food and cigarette is ideal for its prevention.
