A healthy and friendly smile is a definite asset. People react positively almost automatically when they meet people that boast confident, white smiles. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. Many people are repelled by those that display missing, discoloured and rotten teeth. Sadly, first impressions almost always last. Thankfully, there is no reason to be ashamed to smile confidently. A Hampstead dentist can make sure that his patients boast healthy smiles at all times.

Dentists do not only work on the teeth. They are trained to deal with a very wide range of diseases and conditions that affect the overall oral health of their patients. The tongue, the gums, the palate and the soft tissue inside the mouth can all develop a wide variety of problem. The mouth is moist and it processes food and drink. That makes it susceptible to infection and bacterial growth.

Dentists lament the fact that so many of their patients only make appointments when they experience severe pain. In such cases the problem has been present for some time and it had a chance to develop in a more serious problem. The treatment of these problems will be much more invasive and expensive. This can be avoided by visiting a dental clinic twice a year for a general check up.

Many modern dentists will also entertain requests for cosmetic dental treatment. They can use a variety of techniques to whiten the teeth, for example. They can change the shape of one or more teeth and they can straighten the teeth too. Damaged teeth can be repaired to look like new and it is even possible to decorate the teeth with gems or other metals such as gold or platinum.

People that suffer from oral health problems, such as bad breath, missing and rotten teeth and discoloured gums are often all too conscious about the poor image that they portray. In many cases this lead to a severe lack of self esteem and even other psychological problems such as depression. The are seen as unfriendly and asocial because they refrain from smiling and they avoid social occasions.

People used to be scared of dentists because they associated a visit with pain and discomfort. This is no longer the case. Modern dental treatment methods are virtually painless and most of the problems experienced in the past are no longer an issues. Dentures that do not fit well, caps that are coloured differently than the rest of the teeth and fillings that keep falling out are now unheard of.

Maintaining good oral health does not require a lot of time or money. It is important to schedule a routine examination twice a year when latent problems can be identified . It is also vital to brush regularly and to use a good quality brush. The entire oral cavity should be brushed, not just the teeth. Flossing and rinsing the mouth also help to prevent bacteria from growing.

There is no longer any reason to be ashamed to smile. Modern dentistry can make sure that everyone enjoys a wholesome, healthy and friendly smile. This can be achieved by maintaining a high standard of oral health and by visiting the dental clinic regularly.
