Acting as a relay between the actual living world and the unseen world otherwise known as the spiritual world, these are persons who have since had a popularity for their practice from as back as part of the 19th century, the same time when such fan base came crumbling down. Probably due to the never ending critiques from science practitioners and other individuals implying that the San Diego mediums acts simply was composed of staged plays.

Such inquisitive research was undertaken by a psychological society in British which found negative results to their subjects portrayal of any kind of such medium-like abilities. However, cases of mediumistic activities have since been reported most common of all, cases where an entity takes over a human being and all being evident through a strange voice emanating from the victim.

Apart from just being a one way channel, individuals who practice the act are a two way channel; both speaking from the spiritual world to the human world and from the human world to the spiritual world. In addition to such basic practices, it at times is needed of them to lend their bodies to the entities who then use it to communicate directly to their audience, afterwards returning the body.

A classification of mediumship falls into two categories. Either those who use mentalism or those who tend to bring a physical manifestation of the spirit. Those who use mentalism simply listen into what the spirits are implying through an application of extrasensory perceptions. Physical manifestations would then involve a visible reaction from the spirit. The act has also been portrayed repeatedly in movies and other television shows, whether under fiction, fantasy or true story genres, it is for one to decide.

Evidently, from the biblical times of the old leader called Saul, and his invoking of the dead spirit of a prophet called Samuel, the practice has a rich history that tells of how it grew into time. At a period between 1920 and 1930, the numbers of those who believed and took part in this practice rose to their highest point.

Issues of fraud within the practice have all the same been reported throughout history. Most famous is that of a person by the name Colin Evans who purported to be endowed with a special ability to freely levitate by beings from the spiritual world. Such frauds have been recorded in the books alongside other written experiences as those of Dorreen Philips on actual contacts with spirits. Such have been published and commercialized.

Christianity stands against the practice clearly advising against it in its scriptures. A verse, Leviticus 19:31 states that mediumship and spiritualism should not be sought for whatever the case. To this date, it continuous to survive, with the incorporation of information technology where one in need of such services can simply get them online; some sites claim to offer genuine services from those conforming to such practices.

With the 21th century famous practitioners like Allison Dubois and Chip Coffey, the act which most view as a dark practice keeps trudging on as a long lived act. Similarly as the act lives on, so does the question as to whether the act is a genuine one. An over the time clash between science and the practice.
